No, Thank YOU!
You may recall that we recently had a minor incident involving a 1994 Oldsmobile, our car and our front porch. On Wednesday, I wrote our Alderman to request that something be done about the dangerous intersection across the street.
Today, we received a letter from the City of St. Louis Department of Public Safety, in which the Department thanked us for “choosing to live in the City of St. Louis” and for our “care and interest in [our] property and our neighborhood.”
Well, isn’t that nice. Usually, we don’t even get a Christmas card or a note thanking us for paying our City Earnings Tax.
However, the letter further advised us that the Department has inspected our porch and determined it to be in violation of the Property Maintenance Code and other ordinances. The Department will again inspect our property on December 18, 2005. If the porch is not brought into compliance by that time, it will be necessary for the Department “to refer this matter to the City Counselor’s Office for possible prosecution.”
I appreciate the fact that City officials are becoming more aggressive in enforcing the property maintenance code. In general, that’s a good thing. However, there are certainly a lot of properties in South St. Louis in far greater need of repair than our place, and the letter really rubbed me the wrong way under the circumstances.
Hopefully, we will conclude the insurance claim before the City has to get medieval on us.
