Oops! Our Bad.
Less than a day after escorting her from the House chamber in handcuffs, Capitol Police intend to ask the U.S. Attorney to drop charges against Cindy Sheehan.
“We screwed up,” a top Capitol Police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
He said Sheehan didn’t violate any rules or laws.
I guess they forgot about section 234 of the Patriot Act, which criminalizes “the overt practice of democracy in any form.”
Quick quiz for the day:
Who owns the United States House of Representatives?
A. George W. Bush;
B. Jack Abramoff;
C. That guy from the SnackWells commercials;
D. The People of the United States of America.
Note: If you selected B, you are technically correct; however, the question refers to the actual building, rather than its inhabitants. I apologize for the ambiguity.
UPDATE: As Glenn Greenwald and others have noted,
[w]hen it was first posted last night, the AP article quoted above, on MSNBC, contained the quotes from the Capitol Police indicating that they “screwed up” and that “Sheehan didn’t violate any rules or laws.” At some point between last night and this morning, those sentences were deleted from the AP article.
However, the Capitol Police were similarly quoted elsewhere:
On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer said neither woman should have been removed from the chamber. “We made a mistake,” he told CNN…. “Just wearing a T-shirt is not unlawful,” Gainer said.
