Read the Fine Print
I’ve made a few disparaging remarks about the insurance industry. Perhaps I’ve been unfair. I’ll offer this without additional commentary:
Victims of the Ethan Allen tour boat tragedy that killed 20 people, including 19 from Michigan, have suffered a final indignity, one more cruel twist.

Jim Quirk, whose company owns the Ethan Allen, said he was led to believe the boat’s $2-million policy covered marine accidents. The insurance company counters that the Ethan Allen was insured only for accidents on land, not on the water, and that the owner knew that.

Last summer, months before the accident, Quirk said he finally received a copy of the policy. He said he glanced at the paperwork, but didn’t read it carefully.
Allweiss, his attorney, said Quirk failed to notice the policy now excluded marine liability. Allweiss said the alteration amounted to a scam.
“All of the proposals were for marine liability insurance,” Allweiss said. “Which makes sense. Shoreline Cruises Inc. conducts tour boat operations on a landlocked lake. There is not a whole lot of on-ground stuff.”
