Even French police departments have given up on Peugeot and Renault:
PARIS (Reuters) - The next time a criminal in a getaway car in France looks in the rear window the chances are that the vehicle in pursuit will be a blue French police Subaru.
* * *
The Subaru Impreza WRX cars will replace Peugeot’s 306 S16 and the Renault Megane Coupe.
The police forces are among the most faithful clients of the local car makers, but this time the French offerings were just too slow.
As a satisfied two-time Subaru owner, I can attest to the wisdom of this decision.

Though, arguably, they’re just buying the -wrong- Peugeots, as Peugeot regularly -trounces- Subaru in World Rally Championship.

I don’t follow the WRC very much, but it’s my understanding that Peugeot pulled out of the competition and is no longer developing its WRC car. I believe you’re right that Peugeot has one or two championships over Subaru, and they’ve both been spending a lot of time breathing Citroën’s exhaust fumes lately.
In any event, the Subaru “family fun wagon” we own is not likely to win any race.

Peugeot is pulling out, yes, for one year. A lot of teams are running as unofficial ‘privateer’ teams this year; FIA has recently revised the WRC regs, and they’re all having to redo their cars. We should see Peugeot back next year.
Citroen has been doing quite well lately, but they’re owned by Peugeot, so it still counts as a victory for PSA.
Subaru’s certainly no slouch, and one of my favorite manufacturers, it’s just worth the point that not -all- Peugeots are slow. I’m rather curious as to what we’ll see out of Subaru with their new divorce from GM and marriage to Toyota. Well, beyond the oddity of the Subaru Indiana plant assembling Camrys.
