Now That Wasn’t So Hard, Was It?
During his press conference with Tony Blair just moments ago, President Bush was asked what he personally regrets most about the manner in which he has handled the Iraq war. I anticipated his typical evasive and defensive response.
Instead, he struck a remarkably candid and sincere tone and admitted that he regrets his reckless “bring it on” remark and other “tough talk that sent the wrong signal.” He added that he should have expressed himself “in a more sophisticated manner.” (My rough transcript). In addition, he acknowledged the catastrophic consequences of the Abu Ghraib scandal.
With those remarks, my respect for him increased measurably. It was the first indication I’ve seen in a very long time that he has any grasp on reality. It’s too bad he didn’t add that, in retrospect, perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea to manipulate the truth in order to drag the country into this mess in the first place.
