We’d Better Get Cracking if We’re Going to Find Another Planet

Posted by Chris on June 19, 2006 at 5:44 pm.

After ticking a few non-air-conditioned local destinations off our list, the boys and I hit the St. Louis Science Center this afternoon. While there, we took in the IMAX presentation of Tom Hanks’ “Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon”. The film was stunning on the massive IMAX wrap-around screen; it was well […]

Unfortunately, we don’t have one of those.
The most horrifying five words in the English language: “Dad, Sean found Mom’s makeup!”

Just so you know, man has not yet invented a solvent capable of restoring our bathroom to its pre-makeup condition.UPDATE: And don’t even get me started […]

Hang Up and Drive!

Posted by Chris on June 15, 2006 at 10:43 am.

Seriously, this stuff has to stop:

A distracted driver swerved in her vehicle Tuesday, hitting and seriously injuring a 3-year-old boy who was playing in his front yard.
St. Charles County Sheriff Tom Neer said the 30-year-old female was driving about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Oakborough Drive in the Field Crest subdivision, in […]

The Wisdom of Mr. Rogers

From my friend, Bill:

People ask me, “Bill, what’s wrong with this f’ing country?”
I tell them, for starters, that we seem to have forgotten this guy.

Why We Send Our Kids to a Parochial School, Reason 876

Posted by Chris on May 24, 2006 at 12:06 pm.

We love our kindergartener’s school. This occurred at a magnet school, one of a group of “top tier” facilities in the St. Louis City public school system.
The renaissance occurring in St. Louis City is amazing, but the city will never thrive until it completely revamps its deplorable public school system.

The Kids are Not Alright

Posted by Chris on May 2, 2006 at 5:09 pm.

Loosely paraphrasing the great poet Whitney Houston, the kids are our future.
We are totally screwed:

WASHINGTON - Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn’t locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.
Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 fared […]

Carpe Diem and the Evil Next Door

Posted by Chris on April 17, 2006 at 10:36 pm.

Although I write this scarcely a day after assembling a macabre scene of marshmallow animals in a juvenile attempt at satire, I consider myself sufficiently competent to declare this guy creepy beyond belief:

PURCELL, Oklahoma (AP) — The man accused of killing a 10-year-old neighbor girl for an elaborate plan to eat human flesh joked about […]

Watch Those Kids!

Posted by Chris on March 31, 2006 at 12:52 pm.

Our two boys love Magnetix magnetic building sets — especially our three year old, who must be continuously told not to place the tiny pieces in his mouth. Here’s why:

WASHINGTON - One child died and four others suffered serious injuries after swallowing tiny magnets found in building sets sold nationwide, the Consumer Product Safety […]

No, Thank YOU!

Posted by Chris on November 19, 2005 at 5:37 pm.

You may recall that we recently had a minor incident involving a 1994 Oldsmobile, our car and our front porch. On Wednesday, I wrote our Alderman to request that something be done about the dangerous intersection across the street.
Today, we received a letter from the City of St. Louis Department of Public Safety, in […]

A Simple Request

Posted by Chris on November 15, 2005 at 3:02 pm.

We live in a great neighborhood. Its population is diverse, generally progressive and disproportionately young. It’s filled with rehabbed historic homes, ethnic restaurants, corner bars and eclectic shops all within walking distance. These days it seems that a cool new place opens its doors every month. We love […]

Which Crest?

Posted by Chris on September 30, 2005 at 6:07 pm.

I whipped up the lame “Q” logo above in about 30 seconds using The GIMP’s drop shadow tools. I’d like to replace it with some version of our family crest. However, a few minutes of googling has caused me to question whether the crest I have always recognized as my family crest […]
